A double-glazed sliding door at a Corio property was struck by a whipper snipper, shattering the outer panel and leaving the door unsafe.
Only one pane broke, but the whole unit had to go
This is the part that surprises people. The inner pane was intact, so it looks like a half-repair should do.
It cannot. A double-glazed unit is a sealed assembly, and the two panes plus the cavity between them are manufactured as one item. Once the outer pane goes, the seal is broken and the unit no longer performs. There is no way to fit a single new pane into an existing sealed unit on site.
So the correct repair is a full unit replacement, which is what we supplied and installed.
What the new unit gives back
Double glazing restores energy efficiency, sound reduction and durability, which is why it was specified in the first place. Replacing it like-for-like keeps all three rather than quietly downgrading the door to single glazing.
