Sliding Door Glass Replacement in Geelong
Came home to a sliding door in a million pieces? A stone off the mower or the whipper snipper is the most common cause we see, and it is the job we do more than any other. We replace the glass in most sliding doors the same day, in laminated safety glass to Australian Standards.
Send a photo of the whole door and your suburb. That is genuinely all we need to price it, and it is faster than trying to describe a shattered door over the phone.
Same door, same room, same visit. Nothing was staged and nothing was tidied up for the photo, that is simply what the job looks like from the inside.
That one was a weekend callout, and it went back in on the day
Here is what more commonly happens. A glazier attends, screws a sheet of ply over the opening, measures up, orders the panel, and returns one or two weeks later to fit it. That is two attendances, charged as two attendances, and a fortnight of living behind plywood with the room dark and the house not properly secure.
We work to get it done in one. On most sliding doors we cut and fit laminated safety glass on the same visit, weekends included. One trip instead of two, the opening is glass again before we leave, and it usually works out cheaper for exactly that reason.
It also means you are not the household with a board over the back door for a fortnight, explaining it to everyone who visits.
Where a door genuinely cannot be done in one visit, and some cannot, we tell you that when you send the photo rather than after we have arrived.
Mowing and Whipper Snipper Damage
If your door went while somebody was mowing or edging, you are in very familiar company. It is the single most common way a sliding door gets destroyed in Geelong, and most people are stunned that something so small could do it.
A small stone is more than enough
A mower blade throws a stone at genuinely serious speed. It does not need to be a big one, and it does not need to hit hard in any way you would notice. A chip of bluestone off a garden edge will do it.
It is not something you did wrong
People often ring apologising, as though they broke it through carelessness. You did not. This happens to careful people constantly, and the only real prevention is not throwing stones at glass, which is not always in your control.
Why the whole panel went, not just a chip
Sliding door glass is toughened safety glass. It is under enormous internal tension by design, which is what makes it strong. Break that tension anywhere and the entire pane releases at once into small blunt pieces. There is no such thing as a small crack in a toughened door.
The blunt pieces are the safety part working
It looks catastrophic, and it is a genuine mess, but that is toughened glass doing exactly its job. The alternative is ordinary float glass, which comes down in long blades. Small pebbles are the far better outcome, particularly with kids or pets in the house.
Most Sliding Doors Go Back In the Same Day
A shattered door is not just a broken thing, it is an open wall. The house is not secure, the weather is coming in, and it is not safe with children or animals around. So it gets treated as urgent rather than booked in for next week.
Why nobody replaces toughened glass on the day
This is the part most people are never told. Toughened glass cannot be cut. It is cut to size while it is still ordinary glass, then heat treated in a furnace, and once it comes out it is a finished product. Put a cutter near it and the whole sheet lets go.
So replacing a toughened panel like for like means having one manufactured to your exact opening. That takes days. It is the reason the standard answer in this trade is a sheet of ply over the hole and a return visit next week, and it is why you get charged for two attendances.
What we do instead
We carry laminated safety glass, along with the specialty products needed to fit it properly into a frame that was originally built for toughened. Laminated can be cut on the day, so rather than ordering a panel and leaving you boarded up, we cut it and fit it on the spot.
That works on roughly 95 per cent of sliding doors. The variable is the frame, which is exactly why we ask for a photo of it before we commit to a same day fit.
And laminated is the better glass anyway
This is not a compromise to get the job done faster. In a sliding door, laminated is arguably what should have been there in the first place.
Both are Grade A safety glass
Toughened and laminated are both approved safety glass under the Australian Standard for glazing. Your door is fully compliant either way, so nothing is being given up to get it done today.
It stays in the frame when it breaks
Laminated is two sheets bonded to a plastic interlayer. Break it and the interlayer holds the pieces in place. You get a cracked door rather than a floor covered in glass and an open wall, which matters most with kids, pets, or a door you cannot get to straight away.
It does not shatter on its own
Spontaneous breakage, where a panel lets go with nobody near it, is a toughened glass problem caused by tension stored inside the sheet. Laminated is not made that way and does not do it.
Quieter, and better on UV
The interlayer knocks down noise coming through the door and filters most of the ultraviolet, which is worth having on a big west facing slider with furniture and flooring behind it.
The honest exception
Not every door can be done in a day, and we would rather tell you which is which up front than promise it and let you down.
The main one is a double glazed unit. A sealed unit has to be manufactured as a unit, and nobody can make one on a driveway. Some frames also will not take laminated without modification, and a handful of commercial and stacker setups need a second visit.
If yours is one of those, we secure the opening properly on the first visit so the house is closed up and safe while the glass is made.

Every frame is built differently and every opening measures differently, which is why we price from a photo rather than a list.

Your Insurance May Cover It
A lot of people assume they are wearing the whole cost and start ringing around for the cheapest price. It is worth a two minute check before you do.
Many home and contents policies in Australia cover accidental glass breakage, and some carry a reduced or nil excess specifically for glass. Whether yours does depends entirely on your policy, so check your product disclosure statement or ring your insurer and ask about accidental glass breakage.
There Are Two Ways to Run a Glass Claim
Lodge it with the insurer first
- You ring the insurer and report the damage
- They issue a claim number
- They assign the job to a glazier or a builder on their panel
- That party contacts you and books a time
Nothing wrong with it, but it moves between three parties before anyone attends. That can be a few hours. It can also be days.
Get it done now and claim afterwards
- You call us and we attend
- The door is replaced or made secure
- You pay us and we give you a tax invoice and photographs
- You send that to your insurer and they reimburse you
Far quicker, and the property is closed up the same day rather than at the end of a paperwork chain.
If you are going down the second path, it is worth a quick call to your insurer first to confirm they will accept an invoice from a glazier of your choosing. Most will, particularly for emergency work, but policies differ and we would rather you knew before you paid than after.
Why leaving it open is the bigger risk
Insurers expect you to take reasonable steps to keep the property secure. If somebody gets in through an opening that was left unsecured, a theft claim can be reduced or refused on the grounds that the house was not properly closed up. The same argument gets made about water damage through an open wall in bad weather.
That is the real reason glazing after a breakage is treated as emergency work. It is not about the glass. It is about closing the building back up before something worse happens, and about the people inside it being safe in the meantime.
So if the opening cannot be glazed today, it gets secured today. That part does not wait for a claim number.
