Same Day or Two Visits? What Actually Decides It

Two houses ring on the same morning with a broken window. One is finished by lunchtime; the other is boarded up and completed four days later.

The difference is almost never the glazier. It is what glass the opening needs.

Glass that can be done the same day

Standard float glass can be cut to size on site. If the position does not require safety glazing under AS1288, this is usually a single-visit job.

Common laminated sizes. Laminated can be cut, so where the thickness and dimensions are something we carry, it goes straight in. A lot of our same-day 6.38 mm laminated door and window replacements fall here.

If your broken pane is an ordinary window in an ordinary frame, the odds are good it is finished in one visit.

Glass that cannot be

Toughened glass. This is the one that surprises people. Toughened is cut to final size and then heat treated in a furnace, and after that it cannot be cut, drilled or trimmed at all. Every toughened panel is made to order, and processing typically runs about five days.

It is also why a pet door has to be part of the panel from manufacture, and why a toughened shower screen's radius corner is decided before it is tempered.

Double-glazed units. A sealed assembly of two panes, a spacer and a sealed cavity, built as one item. It cannot be cut, adapted or assembled on site, and there is no stock size that fits an existing frame. Always custom, always a return visit.

Tinted, obscure and discontinued glass. Matching an existing tint or pattern means ordering it, and some older patterns are no longer manufactured at all.

The workaround that is sometimes available

Occasionally a different compliant glass is available immediately when the original is not.

We have replaced a shattered 4 mm toughened window panel with 5 mm glass the same day rather than leaving a homeowner boarded across a weekend waiting for a matched toughened panel. The replacement fully met AS1288 for that opening. It was not a downgrade, it was a different compliant product that existed on the day.

That is not always possible. Where a matched toughened panel genuinely is required, the wait is real and we will say so rather than fitting the wrong thing quickly.

What happens in the gap

If it is a two-visit job, the opening does not stay open. We secure it with a timber board or safety film depending on the size, position and whether light matters more than strength, and the building stays weather-tight and secure until the glass arrives.

How to find out which one you have

Text photos of the whole panel and frame with your postcode. Most of the time we can tell from a photo whether it is a same-day fix or a make-safe.
