A lawn mower struck and shattered a large double-glazed window unit at an Armstrong Creek property. Between the size of the panel and the safety risk, this needed an after-hours emergency make safe.
Taping a shattered unit rather than removing it
The damaged glass was securely taped and stabilised in place rather than pulled out that night.
That is the right call on a large double-glazed unit. Removing a panel that size after dark, with the glass already compromised, means handling a heavy failing sheet in poor light. Stabilising it eliminates the immediate danger and leaves the removal for daylight, when the replacement is actually ready to go in.
Custom manufactured, then a three-person lift
A double-glazed unit cannot be adapted from stock. Once the custom unit was manufactured we returned to complete the full replacement.
The new unit went in on a three-person lift because of its size and weight. Glass at that scale is not a two-person job: one person cannot control the panel's face while the others take the weight, and a DGU is heavier than a single sheet of the same dimensions because it is two panes plus the spacer assembly.
One step still to come
The window is fully replaced and currently awaiting tinting to match the existing glazing. Tinting is applied after installation, so a newly replaced unit sits clear alongside its tinted neighbours until that final step is done.
