A Large Plate Glass Window That Broke Into Blades
On this page
A large standard plate glass window at a Warncoort property shattered into dangerous, sharp shards, creating an immediate safety risk.
Size makes plate glass worse, not just bigger
Plate glass breaks into large, sharp pieces rather than holding together or crumbling. On a small pane that is bad enough.
On a large panel it is considerably worse, because the fragments are proportionally bigger, heavier and sharper, and there are more of them still standing in the frame after the break. Those remaining pieces are the real hazard, sitting at head height with nothing holding them but the rebate.
That combination is why this one was treated as urgent rather than scheduled.
Same day, upgraded
A same-day replacement was arranged, and the broken panel was replaced with laminated safety glass.
That is a genuine upgrade rather than a like-for-like. Laminated holds together on its interlayer if it is ever broken again, which on a window this size is the difference between a contained crack and a wall of falling shards.
