A stray golf ball struck a window at an older coastal property in Barwon Heads, shattering the glass and leaving the homeowner with an open wall.
Securing it was straightforward. Replacing it was not.
Glass that no longer exists
The window was custom laminated glass in an unusual blue-green mix, originally produced by Pilkington. Pilkington has since ceased operations in Australia, which meant there was no like-for-like panel to order.
On an older coastal home this matters more than it sounds. A clear panel dropped into a run of blue-green glass would have been obvious from the street for the life of the house.
We sourced a custom blue-green laminated panel through Viridian instead, matching the original appearance and meeting Australian Safety Standards.
Two visits, not one
Custom glass takes time to produce, and the house could not sit open while it was made.
We attended the same day, removed the broken glass, cleaned out the frame and installed a professional temporary board-up to keep weather and intruders out. Once the new laminated panel was produced, we came back and completed the permanent installation.
Two visits is the honest answer on custom colour-matched glass. Anyone promising a same-day permanent fix on a discontinued panel is either substituting a different glass or has not checked availability.
