A Big Dog Hit the Slider and It Was Gone Instantly
On this page
A large dog jumped against the sliding door at a Torquay home. The panel shattered instantly, spreading glass across the inside floor and leaving the house unsecured.
Dogs and sliders are a common pairing
This happens more than people expect, and it is rarely an aggressive dog. A big animal running at a clean, well-cleaned slider genuinely does not see it.
Toughened glass takes flat pressure well, but a hard concentrated impact from a heavy dog at speed is exactly the load that releases the whole pane at once. Which is why it is a shattered door rather than a cracked one.
The glass ended up inside
Worth noting for anyone in this situation: the fragments went across the interior floor, where the household walks barefoot. That makes the clean-up as urgent as the glazing, particularly with a dog in the house that has just had a fright and is moving around.
Saturday, same day
We attended on the Saturday, removed all the shattered glass, cleaned the area thoroughly and installed a laminated replacement panel.
Laminated is the sensible choice with pets. The next time the dog misjudges it, the panel cracks and stays in the frame instead of coming down around the animal.
