A Shower Screen Shattered in Torquay, Replaced Within the Week

A fixed shower screen panel in a Torquay bathroom shattered. Toughened glass, so it did what toughened glass is meant to do and broke into thousands of small blunt pieces rather than long blades.

What it did next is the part worth seeing. It stayed up.

It was still standing when we arrived

The whole panel had crazed from top to bottom and was hanging together as a sheet of loose pieces, still held at the base and by its own shape. That happens more often than people expect with toughened glass, and it is a mixed blessing.

The good part is that most of it has not gone across the floor yet. The bad part is that it is now a wall of loose glass that is one bump, one door slam or one curious hand away from letting go all at once. It is not a shower anybody should be using, and it is not something to poke at to see how bad it is.

What caused it, honestly

The likely explanation is spontaneous breakage. That is what usually sits behind a toughened panel letting go with nobody near it and nothing to explain it, and we have written about a balustrade panel that did the same thing on a balcony.

But we are not going to tell you that is definitely what happened here, because it was not confirmed and it usually cannot be.

Once a toughened panel has crazed completely, the evidence goes with it. On a partial break you can sometimes find the origin and read backwards from it, an impact point, a chipped edge, a hard contact with a fitting. On a panel that has gone from corner to corner there is rarely anything left to read.

So the honest answer is that spontaneous breakage is the most likely cause, an unnoticed knock or a stressed edge cannot be ruled out, and it does not change what the bathroom needs either way. We would rather say that than invent a certainty for the sake of sounding sure.

The clean up is bigger than people expect

This is the part nobody thinks about until it happens in their own bathroom.

A toughened panel does not break into a pile you can sweep up. It breaks into thousands of small pieces that travel, and a bathroom is the worst possible room for that. They go down the floor waste, into the grout lines, under the vanity, behind the door, into the corner of the shower base and out into the hallway on somebody's feet.

So the old panel came out and the room got properly vacuumed rather than brushed over. Along the tile joints, around the drain, under the cabinetry, everywhere the pieces had run to. It is unglamorous work and it takes longer than lifting the glass out did, but nobody wants to be finding glass in a bathroom floor with bare feet a fortnight later.

Measured, made and installed within the week

Shower screen glass is made to measure. There is no shelf to take a panel off, because the size, the thickness, the edgework and the cutouts for the fittings all have to match the opening and the hardware already on the wall.

From the quote being accepted, this one was measured, manufactured and installed within the week. For a made to order toughened panel that is about as quick as it gets, and it matters when the household is down to one bathroom in the meantime.

Back in service

New toughened panel in, hardware reused where it was sound, bathroom back to normal.

If a shower screen has gone at your place

Leave it where it is and keep the room shut if you can, particularly from children and pets. A crazed panel that is still standing is stable until something touches it, and the two things that reliably touch it are curiosity and a closing door.

Send us a photo of the whole screen, including the fittings holding it, and the sizes if you can safely reach them. That tells us the panel, the hardware and the edgework in one go, which is what lets the glass be ordered the same day rather than after a second visit.
