A lawn mower threw debris into a toughened sliding door panel at a Waurn Ponds home and it shattered. The customer sealed the opening with plastic sheeting before calling us for a same-day repair.
An upgrade, not a like-for-like
The glass that came out was 4 mm toughened. What went back in was 6.38 mm laminated.
That is a deliberate change on both counts. Thicker, and a completely different failure behaviour.
The appearance is unchanged, which is what most customers care about. What changes is what happens next time something is thrown at it: 4 mm toughened releases the entire pane, 6.38 laminated cracks and holds together on its interlayer.
Why it matters most on a low-level door
A sliding door is floor-to-ceiling glass in a doorway people walk through constantly, often barefoot, often carrying things.
Preventing shards from falling out of that opening is worth considerably more than saving a couple of millimetres of glass thickness, which is why laminated is the right specification for low-level doors generally, not just this one.
Finished and cleared
The replacement was completed quickly, with full clean-up and disposal of the broken glass, restoring security and weather protection.
