Bedding New Glass Into an Existing Timber Frame at Winchelsea

A customer in Winchelsea reported a broken glass panel in a timber-framed window. The damage had come from impact, leaving the glass unsafe and the opening exposed to the weather.
Timber frames are worth keeping
The frame itself was sound. Only the glass had failed, and on an older timber window that is a good outcome, because the joinery is usually the expensive and character-defining part of the window.
Replacing the pane rather than the unit keeps the original sash, the original sight lines and the original proportions.
Bedded and sealed properly
We carefully removed the broken panel and installed new glass meeting AS1288, then bedded and sealed it into the existing timber frame.
That bedding step is what makes the difference in a timber sash. Glass needs to sit on a compliant bed rather than hard against bare timber, so it is not stressed as the frame moves with the weather, and so water cannot track into the rebate and start rotting the joinery from the inside.
Done properly it lasts. Done quickly it cracks or leaks within a couple of seasons.
